INTRODUCTION
The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport
is a professional body for those engaged in transport
and logistics covering all sectors of Industry namely
land, Sea and Air for both freight and passenger.
It was formed originally in United Kingdom in 1919
as the
Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport
and granted a Royal charter in 1926 and renamed as
the “Chartered Institute of Transport” (CIT) http://www.citrans.org.uk/.
An “Independent National Division “IND” of CIT was
established in India by a small group of members in
the year 1987. In April 1998 this IND CIT-India was
upgraded to “National Council Status”. This is the
highest status accorded to CIT in various countries.
Now India has joined their ranks.
At present global membership is more than 33,000 around
the world. As a national council it has now authority
to handle all matters independently. The membership
now reaches about 750 and broadly ranges from experienced
Secretaries of the Government of India to junior staff
in the industries of shipping, railway, road, airline,
government and consultancy.
